A smoke detector is disclosed which uses a beam of radiation such as a laser to monitor a region, such as a room. A camera is used to capture images of part of the room including a path of the laser beam. Particles in the laser beam scatter light and this is captured by the camera for analysis. A processor extracts data relating to the scattered light to determine the density of particles in the beam to determine the level of smoke in the region. The laser may have a modulated output so that images captured without the laser can be used as a reference point and compared to images taken with the laser on to assist in determining the level of scattered light compared to ambient light. Why it's free to use
- Filed May 14, 2004 and granted July 7, 2020. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended May 14, 2024.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by May 14, 2026.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
