A catheter for use in neurosurgery is described. The catheter has a fine tube arranged for insertion into the brain parenchyma of a patient with an external diameter of not more than 1.0 mm. The catheter may be used in stereotactically targeting treatment of abnormalities of brain function and for the infusion of therapeutic agents directly into the brain parenchyma. This is advantageous when a therapeutic agent would have widespread unwanted effects which could be avoided by confining the delivery to the malfunctioning or damaged brain tissue.

Why it's free to use
- Filed March 11, 2003 and granted October 17, 2017. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended March 11, 2023.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by March 11, 2025.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
