A rail road hopper car body has a ridge plate fitting. The hopper car body has lengthwise running spaced apart sidewalls, having upper margins and top chords. The car has first and second hoppers. There is a ridge plate structure mounted between the hoppers. The ridge plate structure has a first part a second part, and a third part. The first and second parts define gussets securing the structure to the side walls. The third part is central and is oriented cross-wise between the sidewalls.
