A system and method for computing car switching solutions in a railway switch yard that has a switch and a plurality of classification tracks, the railway switch yard holding a plurality of empty cars yet to be switched by the switch. The system comprising input means for receiving data specifying a particular empty car to include in a departure train to be built by the railway switch yard and a processing entity including a CPU and a machine readable storage encoded with software.
