Abstract From the Canadian patent

The sequence of a target polynucleotide can be determined by: (i) contacting the target polynucleotide with a polymerase enzyme and one of the nuncleotides A T(U), G and C under conditions suitable for the polymerase reaction to proceed; (ii) measuring the time taken for the polymerase to bind to and subsequently dissociate from the target polynucleotide to thereby determine whether the polymerase has incorporated the nucleotide onto the target polynucleotide; (iii) optionally repeating steps (i) and (ii) with additional nucleotides to thereby identify the sequence of the target polynucleotide.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed July 26, 2004 and granted October 25, 2016. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended July 26, 2024.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by July 26, 2026.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
