Abstract From the Canadian patent

A digital signal coding apparatus and method for making a compression coding of a digital signal is taught. The digital signal is arithmetically coded by determining a context model to be used for each type of coding data among a plurality of context models. The digital signal is divided for each predetermined unit to be coded. Multiplexed into a bit stream are information representing an initial state of probability of occurrence of the context of model corresponding to the type of the coding data and information of initializing a register value which shows an arithmetic coding process with a bit stream as part of the coded data of said predetermined unit.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed April 10, 2003 and granted November 19, 2013. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended April 10, 2023.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by April 10, 2025.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
