There is a need in the art for portable golf swing analysis clubs and systems that can be used on a golf course without bulky external equipment and that provide real time feedback to a golfer. This invention relates to golf clubs. More particularly, it is a system for determining performance characteristics of a golf swing using a self-contained instrumented golf club, the golf club comprising an array of ultrasound sensors configured to receive ultrasound waves reflected from a golf ball; and a transmission module configured to wirelessly transmit golf swing data related to the received ultrasound waves.
