Abstract From the Canadian patent

A system and apparatus for controlled fusion in a field reversed configuration (FRC) magnetic topology and conversion of fusion product energies directly to electric power. Preferably plasma ions are magnetically confined in the FRC while plasma electrons are electrostatically confined in a deep energy well created by tuning an externally applied magnetic field. In this configuration ions and electrons may have adequate density and temperature so that upon collisions they are fused together by the nuclear force thus forming fusion products that emerge in the form of an annular beam. Energy is removed from the fusion product ions as they spiral past electrodes of an inverse cyclotron …

Why it's free to use

  • Filed March 18, 2002 and granted May 29, 2012. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended March 18, 2022.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by March 18, 2024.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
