Described are recombinant yeast which ferment xylose to ethanol and which maintain their ability to do so when cultured for numerous generations in non-selective media. The preferred yeast contain multiple copies of integrated genes encoding xylose reductase xylitol dehydrogenase, and xylulokinase fused to promoters which are non- glucose inhibited and which do not require xylose for induction. Also described are preferred methods for integrating multiple copies of exogenous DNA into host cells by transforming cells with replicative/integrative vectors and then replicating the cells a number of times under selective pressure to promote retention of the vector in subsequent generations. Why it's free to use
- Filed May 6, 1997 and granted February 5, 2013. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended May 6, 2017.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by May 6, 2019.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
