A belay device (1) for protecting a climber (34) on a rope (9) from a fall has a powered winding reel (6) to which the rope (9) is attached. A control mechanism acts to prevent slack in the rope (9) between the climber and the winding reel (6) and includes load sensing means (30) which on detecting the , weight of the climber (34) on the rope switches the operation of the device , to a fall or descent mode where the winding reel (6) is stopped and the climber is suspended by the rope (9) . An electronic control and diagnostic system (22) monitors the operation of the winding reel (6) and switches its operation to a safe, fault mode when a fault is detected.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed April 19, 2006 and granted June 18, 2013. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended April 19, 2026.
  • Certificates of supplementary protection extend only drug patents, and it isn't classified as one.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
