The invention concerns an acoustic telemetry system comprising an apparatus that includes a piezoelectric transducer (210) to generate an acoustic signal that is modulate along a mandrel (204) and a backing mass (208) positioned , adjacent to the piezoelectric transducer (210) and restrained from approximately all lateral movement relative to an axis of the drill string.
