Abstract From the Canadian patent

Dispenser apparatus (1, 3) for dispensing flexible sheet material (1001) including material- recognition apparatus permitting the dispenser to recognize sheet material from an authorized source and to be enabled for operation with such material. The material-recognition apparatus may include a sensor (138) mounted in the dispenser in position to scan a code (10 19) preferably located on the core (1005) on which the sheet material is wound. The sensor generates a code signal corresponding to the code. A control circuit (49) receives and validates the code signal. Sheet material dispensing is allowed if the code is valid or is not allowed if the code is invalid.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed June 30, 2004 and granted April 30, 2013. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended June 30, 2024.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by June 30, 2026.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
