A method and a device (1) for removing gas from wood chips wherein the wood , chips flowing downwards are heated with a steam flow that is cross-directional in relation to the wood chip flow. Preferably steam is fed (11, 12, 15, 20) , to the wood chip flow from the middle and edges of the flow.
