Fluorinated comb co-polymers have a main chain including a semi-rigid hydrophobic fluorinated poly(ether) backbone and comb segments in the form of flexible and monodisperse side chains that are more hydrophilic than the backbone. The side chains may be hydrophilic polymeric chains obtained from "living-type" polymerization for example polymethacrylates, polyethylene oxides polystyrenes. Hydrophilic functionality for example, ionic groups may be selectively introduced onto the side chain post polymerization. The side chain may be sulfonated .alpha.-methyl polystyrene. Such polymers are useful in proton exchange membranes.

Why it's free to use
- Filed May 26, 2006 and granted December 11, 2012. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended May 26, 2026.
- Certificates of supplementary protection extend only drug patents, and it isn't classified as one.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
