Abstract From the Canadian patent

The present invention provides methods and apparatus for improving video quality in statistical multiplexing (50). For each encoding channel in a statistical multiplexer (50), a respective bit rate need parameter is calculated for encoding (40) of a current frame. in that encoding channel. A video buffering verifier level (VBV, 20) available to each encoding channel is also calculated. detennining whether the VBV Fullness (20) available to each encoding channel is sufficient for encoding the current frame of that channel based on an initial complexity estimate for that current frame. Scale the parameter by an adaptive panic multiplier if the VBV Fullness to be insufficient and …

Why it's free to use

  • Filed May 18, 2004 and granted June 19, 2012. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended May 18, 2024.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by May 18, 2026.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
