Abstract From the Canadian patent

A thermal imaging method to detect heat flows from naturally-heated subsurface objects. The method uniquely combines precise, emissivity-corrected temperature maps thermal inertia maps, temperature simulations and automatic target recognition , to display clear clutter-free, three-dimensional images of contained hollow objects or structures, at depths to 20 times their diameter. Temperature scans are corrected using two different infrared bands. Co-registered object-site temperature scans image daily and seasonal temperature-spread differences which vary inversely as the , object's and surrounding host material's thermal inertias. Thermal inertial (resistance to temperature change) is …

Why it's free to use

  • Filed January 30, 2004 and granted October 16, 2012. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended January 30, 2024.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by January 30, 2026.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
