The invention relates to methods and compositions for causing the selective targeting and killing of tumor cells. Through ex vivo gene therapy protocols tumor cells are engineered to express AN .alpha. (1,3) galactosyl epitope. The cells are then irradiated or otherwise killed and administered to a patient. The .alpha. galactosyl epitope causes opsonization of the tumor cell enhancing uptake of the opsonized tumor cell by antigen presenting cells which results in enhanced tumor specific antigen presentation. The animal~s immune system thus is stimulated to produce tumor specific cytotoxic cells and antibodies which will attack and kill tumor cells present in the animal.

Why it's free to use
- Filed October 9, 2003 and granted January 3, 2012. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended October 9, 2023.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by October 9, 2025.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
