Abstract From the Canadian patent

A trocar (10) includes a valve housing (25) and cannula (16) which define a working channel. A valve (36) disposed in the valve housing (25) along the working channel includes a gel material which defines a slit (75) that functions as a zero seal in the absence of an instrument and an instrument , seal in the presence of an instrument. The slit (75) is formed by mating gel components (38, 41) which are preferably separated during storage of the device. This separation can be facilitated by a pull strip (90) which can be pre-lubricated and inserted into the slit (75) for ultimate removal prior to activation of the trocar (10).

Why it's free to use

  • Filed September 24, 2003. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended September 24, 2023.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by September 24, 2025.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
