Abstract From the Canadian patent

There is provided a method for monitoring and controlling the quality of an industrial process. One or more reference signals relating to the industrial process are compared to one or more real signals that are indicative of the quality of the industrial process. Transformed signals are obtained from the reference signal and real signal and the energies of the transformed signals are then calculated. The comparison involves comparing the energies of the transformed signals to extract corresponding time frequency distributions for selected frequency values.
