The present disclosure relates to the identification of the phage lysine from group B streptococci (GBS). The nucleic acid sequence and amino acid sequence of the GBS phage lysine is disclosed. The GBS phage lysine is a unique bifunctional protein comprising a glucosidase and an endopeptidease activity. The endopeptidease present in the GBS phage lysis has a substrate specificity that has not been previously reported. The bifunctional GBS phage lysine is effective against groups A, B, C, E and G streptococci. Also described are methods of using the GBS phage lysine for the prevention and treatment of bacterial infections.

Why it's free to use
- Filed August 28, 2003. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended August 28, 2023.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by August 28, 2025.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
