This invention relates to a method for determining whether a bovine animal possesses a gene for .beta.-casein A2 or the gene for .beta.-casein A1 in its milk by testing the DNA of the bovine animal for the presence of at least one DNA marker (excluding those DNA markers present in the sequence of the genes themselves). In particular, the method uses SNPs as DNA markers for the .beta.casein A2 and .beta.-casein A1 genes.

Why it's free to use
- Filed May 23, 2003 and granted July 16, 2013. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended May 23, 2023.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by May 23, 2025.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
