A multiple diameter tangential set screw (1) particularly for securing a rod (4) within a hook shaped rod receiver (11) includes a threaded mounting segment (25), a threaded rod engaging segment (27) and an abutment surface , (29) at a transition between the mounting segment (25) and the rod engaging segment (27). The mounting segment (25) has a larger diameter than the rod engaging segment (27) and is received in a threaded bore (22) formed in the rod receiver (11). The abutment surface (29) has a concavely radiused surface of revolution.
