A dental impression dam system (10) utilizing an open tray (12) forming a basin (26) for dental impression material (40). The basin (26) of the tray (12) includes a gap (28, 30) at an extremity of the same. A flexible band (34 36) of porous material bridges the gap (28 30) of the tray basin (26) and , interacts with the dental material (40) to form unit. The flexible band (34 36) adheres to the external wall portions (24) of the tray (12) when in place.
