Abstract From the Canadian patent

A composition comprising a novel Ca2+-activated ATPi-sensitive nonspecific , cation (NCCa-ATP) channel is described. The channel is found in mammalian neural cells and exhibits a different sensitivity to block by various adenine nucleotides, and is activated by submicromolar Cai. The NCCa-ATP channel is activated under conditions of ATP depletion which causes severe cell , depolarization followed by cell swelling. The NCCa-ATP channel is regulated by a sulfonylurea receptor and is inhibited by sulfonylurea compounds glibenclamide and tolbutamide. Methods employing compositions comprising the NCCa-ATP channel to screen for compounds that block the channel and the use of such …

Why it's free to use

  • Filed March 20, 2003 and granted October 14, 2014. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended March 20, 2023.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by March 20, 2025.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
