Abstract From the Canadian patent

It is intended to provide a method of efficiently constructing a germline chimeric animal and a method of conveniently constructing a heterozygous animal and a homozygous animal. More specifically speaking embryonic stem , cells (ES cells) are injected into an early embryo (i.e. a blastocyst) which cannot form germ cells due to a genetic cause to thereby construct a chimeric animal carrying germ cells originating in the ES cells thus injected. By crossing male and female heterozygotes obtained from the chimeric animal a , homozygote can be obtained. The chimeric animal thus obtained is highly useful in analyzing gene functions, etc.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed February 27, 2003. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended February 27, 2023.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by February 27, 2025.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
