The invention provides engineered RNA precursors that when expressed in a cell are processed by the cell to produce targeted small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) that selectively silence targeted genes (by cleaning specific mRNAs) using the cell's own RNA interference (RNAi) pathway. By introducing nucleic acid molecules that encode these engineered RNA precursors into cells in vivo with appropriate regulatory sequences, expression of the engineered RNA precursors can be selectively controlled both temporally and spatially i.e. at , particular times and/or in particular tissues organs, or cells.

Why it's free to use
- Filed July 12, 2002 and granted May 10, 2016. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended July 12, 2022.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by July 12, 2024.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
