Abstract From the Canadian patent

An apparatus and method (600) for encoding quantized frequency represented data, the data comprising zero and non-zero represented data is claimed. For zero represented data, a zero run length is determined. A Golomb parameter is determined as a function of the zero run length. A quotient is encoded as a function of the zero run length and the Golomb parameter. A remainder is encoded as a function of the zero run length the Golomb parameter and the , quotient. The coded quotient and the coded remainder are concatenated. For nonzero represented data, the nonzero data is encoded as a function of the nonzero data value and the sign of the non-zero data value.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed June 17, 2002 and granted January 3, 2012. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended June 17, 2022.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by June 17, 2024.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
