The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for determining the optical properties of a multi-layered tissue, which is a stratified structure with optical properties that may vary from one layer to the next. More specifically, the invention relates to a method for early detection and characterization of tumours in a multi-layered tissue. "Optical properties" refer to absorption and scattering coefficients, and the asymmetry factor describing the angular dependence of the scattered light. A radiative transfer model pertaining to a coupled air/tissue system is used to provide algorithms for retrieving tissue optical properties and determining the location of tumours …

Why it's free to use
- Filed March 6, 2002 and granted November 19, 2013. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended March 6, 2022.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by March 6, 2024.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
