The design of a hardware component such as a digital filter can be optimised by taking an initial population of filter designs and encoding them as chromosomes. The fitness of each chromosome is then evaluated and parent chromosomes are then selected based on the fitness criteria. Offspring chromosomes are then generated ussing genetic operations such as mutation and crossover from the pool of offspring, and optionally parents individuals are , selected to survive using a combination of Pareto fronts based on nondominated individuals and clustering. The process is repeated or until a termination criteria is satisfied.

Why it's free to use
- Filed March 13, 2002. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended March 13, 2022.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by March 13, 2024.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
