The invention addresses the demand for enhanced information capacity by increasing the number of fibers per cable. In one embodiment the cable (121) , includes flexible flat multiple-fiber jackets (122) which can move freely within the cable. The cable is preferably divided into at least two cells in order to maintain structural strength while allowing the cable to bend only along a desired direction. Multiple-fiber connectors suitable for the jackets and arrangements for coupling pumping light into multiple fibers for amplification, are also described.

Why it's free to use
- Filed November 21, 2001. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended November 21, 2021.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by November 21, 2023.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
