The invention relates to a method and a device for determining a threshold value (Omax, Omin, OTR) for limiting an output signal of a processing unit to which an input signal is delivered. According to the invention a level of the , input signal is determined and the threshold value (Omax Omin, OTR) is , adjusted in accordance with this level. The adjustment of the threshold value according to the level of the input signal i.e. the adaptive adjustment of , the threshold value enables transient noises at a level clearly below the maximum value for the threshold value to be limited as well.
