A winch comprising a closed frame being adapted to be secured to a structure. A reel has a drum and spaced apart flanges on the drum. A cable attachment on the drum and/or the flanges is adapted for connection to a free end of a cable. The reel is supported by the frame so as to axially rotate in the frame. The reel is adapted to be actuated to wind/unwind a cable on the drum portion such that a load connected to the cable is supported pulled or lifted by the winch. The closed frame prevents the cable from falling off the winch when wound/unwound by the reel.

Why it's free to use
- Filed March 6, 2003 and granted November 1, 2011. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended March 6, 2023.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by March 6, 2025.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
