Light of selected wavelengths is passed through blood or body tissue and the transmitted or reflected light is detected and the detected signals can be electronically compared and manipulated to provide the non-invasive continuous and quantitive display of , a patient's blood urea blood osmolarity (or Na+), plasma free hemoglobin and tissue water content.

Why it's free to use
- Filed June 2, 2000. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended June 2, 2020.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by June 2, 2022.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
