Abstract From the Canadian patent

The scanning receiver spectrum analyzer system is a system for monitoring the spectrum of RF energy on the upstream cable plant for the purpose of operating a group of cable modems in frequency bands that are the most interferencefree. The spectrum analyzer surveys the entire upstream spectrum (typically 5 - 42 MHz) to determine the noise level at each frequency and then weighing , this data with current operating conditions (e.g. bit error rates) to determine the best possible alternative channel frequency for modems on an upstream node, and then waiting for a trigger condition to occur which indicates a need for the modems to change frequency.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed May 10, 2001. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended May 10, 2021.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by May 10, 2023.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
