This invention is concerned with a method of attenuating sound transmission in any medium (e.g. air, water, human tissue). The similarity of the scattering of light waves and acoustic waves by, crystal-like structures is recognised. Accordingly a method is devised to , inhibit the transmission of sound using one or more intervening acoustic crystals placed in parallel or in series. An acoustic, crystal is defined as an ensemble consisting of either (1) a two-dimensional array of straight rigid, cylinders placed parallel or (2) a three-dimensional array of rigid spheres. By customising the, ensemble element (i.e. cylinder or sphere) dimensions spacings, and , properties (density, …

Why it's free to use
- Filed October 11, 2002. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended October 11, 2022.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by October 11, 2024.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
