A computer implemented method for modeling of faulting and fracturing uses "small scale rules" to produce large-scale results. A user selects one of three modes of definition (101) that defines the model used (103); the model may be aerial, cross-sectional, or three-dimensional. Stresses are then applied (111). An "anticipate" step (111) provides a quick solution to the deformation excluding effects of faulting and final deformations including , effects of faulting are calculated using a dynamic range relaxation (115 117).

Why it's free to use
- Filed April 3, 2001 and granted January 21, 2014. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended April 3, 2021.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by April 3, 2023.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
