An interferometer for detecting a property of an environment includes a light beam source, two planar waveguides and a phase difference detector. The planar waveguides are disposed parallel to each other and define a cavity between them. Each waveguide includes two couplers for respectively coupling and then decoupling the beam of light in and out of the respective waveguide. The two portions of light outcoupled from the waveguides are combined and detected by the phase difference detector. The phase difference changes according to the substance which flows through the cavity and the coatings applied between the , waveguides and the substance.

Why it's free to use
- Filed November 30, 2000 and granted February 7, 2012. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended November 30, 2020.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by November 30, 2022.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
