A shop checkout is provided with a system for recognising objects particularly objects that do not carry a bar code or UPC code. The object (11) is placed on a viewplate (10) which is lit from behind and a digital camera (13) captures a backlit silhouette image of the object. A data processing system analyses the image to extract characterising features of the image and the object is identified from a list of known object features in a database. The checkout operator may interact with the system via a touchscreen (23) which displays results of the object recognition process and accepts input such as menu selections from the operator.

Why it's free to use
- Filed August 10, 2000. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended August 10, 2020.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by August 10, 2022.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
