Abstract From the Canadian patent

This invention is a disposable cartridge (10) for use at the patient side to perform traditional coagulation assays on fresh whole blood or blood derivative samples. The cartridge (10) in use with an electronic analyzer , allows a fluid sample to be metered and quantitatively mixed with reagents which activate the coagulation cascade. An artificial substrate for thrombin the enzyme whose action results in clot formation is also provided. Clot formation is subsequently detected using a microfabricated sensor (29) also housed within the cartridge (10) which detects electrochemically the product of the thrombin reaction upon the synthetic substrate.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed November 15, 2000. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended November 15, 2020.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by November 15, 2022.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
