Abstract From the Canadian patent

A thermally sensitive polymer-particle composite (10) that absorbs electromagnetic radiation and uses the absorbed energy to , trigger the delivery of a chemical (20) is disclosed. Metal nanoshells (16) are nanoparticulate materials that are suitable for use in the present composites (10) and can be made according to a process that includes optically tuning or tailoring their maximum optical absorption to any de-sired wavelength primarily by altering the ratio or the core diameter to the shell thickness. Preferred nanoshells (16) are selected that strongly absorb light in the near-infrared and thus produce heat. These nanoshells (16) are combined with a temperature-sensitive …

Why it's free to use

  • Filed July 14, 2000 and granted March 22, 2011. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended July 14, 2020.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by July 14, 2022.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
