Live virus vaccines comprise attenuated viruses while other vaccines comprise , killed viruses or parts thereof. It has now been found that the immune response induced by oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) which is a live vaccine, is , cross-reactive with non-polio enteroviruses. OPV is therefore useful in the prevention of non-polio enterovirus diseases especially Type 1 diabetes , mellitus (IDDM). OPV is also useful in combination with killed/subunit nonpolio enterovirus vaccines, whereby it prevents harmful side-effects of the killed/subunit vaccine by shifting the immune response from a harmful Th2- type response to a Th1 type response.

Why it's free to use
- Filed March 17, 2000 and granted August 5, 2014. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended March 17, 2020.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by March 17, 2022.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
