A cell-based assay is provided for screening substances for the capacity to inhibit COX-2 activity. The assay utilizes as a screening reagent a cell line which has been engineered to achieve constitutive or inducible expression of COX-2. In one embodiment, the cells express a GTPase-deficient constitutively-, activated mutant form of the .alpha.-subunit of protein G12 which induces the production of arachidonic acid and COX-2. Decreased cell proliferation in the presence of test substance indicates that the substance has COX-2 inhibitory activity.

Why it's free to use
- Filed June 15, 2000. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended June 15, 2020.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by June 15, 2022.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
