A key and lock device comprises a key having a first electronic circuitry and a lock having a second electronic circuitry. The key and the lock store secret information some of which is unique for each device. The key and the lock exchange a random number through connectors and perform a calculation in the respective circuitry based on the random number and secret information. An electrical blocking mechanism is moved to a non-blocking position if a comparison of the calculations in the circuits give an expected result.

Why it's free to use
- Filed May 5, 2000 and granted July 2, 2013. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended May 5, 2020.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by May 5, 2022.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
