The rate of aminolysis of butyrolactones is predictably adjusted by attaching a substituent having a known field effect value (F) to the alpha position before reacting the substituted butyrolactone with an amine. The aminolysis product is a gamma-hydroxy amide. The resulting materials are useful as the cross-linking agents in a variety of coatings and coatings processes.

Why it's free to use
- Filed June 13, 2000. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended June 13, 2020.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by June 13, 2022.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
