Abstract From the Canadian patent

Embodiments of this invention provide for detecting a type of an accessory device connected to a portable computer. The portable computer may detect a signal from the accessory device and determine the type of accessory device using the signal. Once the type of accessory is identified the portable , computer may implement a software that matches the particular type of accessory. The type of accessory may be identified by measuring a voltage of a signal line that is coupled to the accessory device. The value of the voltage on the signal line may then be matched to a corresponding accessory type using a memory of the portable computer.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed April 4, 2000. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended April 4, 2020.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by April 4, 2022.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
