A rotary steerable system (10) for use in a drill string (9) for drilling a deviated well is disclosed. The system (10) utilizes a mechanical gravity reference device comprising an unbalanced weight (14) which may rotate independently of the rotation of the drill string (9) so that its heavy portion is always oriented toward the low side of the wellbore and which has an attached magnet (16). A magnetic switch (17) that rotates as the drill string (9) rotates is activated when its axis coincides with the axis of the magnet (16), and this activation results in a thrust member or pad (25) being actuated to "kick" the side of the wellbore.

Why it's free to use
- Filed March 7, 2000. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended March 7, 2020.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by March 7, 2022.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
