Amyloid-.beta. peptide (A.beta.) formation and the apoptotic loss of neurons are intimately linked processes in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer's disease. The roles of apoptotic proteases and caspases in cleavage of amyloid-.beta. precursor protein (APP) and biogenesis of amyloidogenic A.beta. peptide species are described. Antibodies that recognize caspase cleaved APP are described as well as various utilities therefore.

Why it's free to use
- Filed April 13, 2000. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended April 13, 2020.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by April 13, 2022.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
