The invention provides an apparatus, and related method for continuous volume , imaging a specimen using imaging a plurality of image planes at predetermined focal depths. The focal depth for each image plane is adjustable in accordance with a variety of desired spatial configurations. The images generated at the image planes are processing in parallel and the image corresponding the an optimal focal depth at a specimen location is selected for imaging the specimen at that location. The volume imaging apparatus of the invention allows for rapid scanning of an entire microscope slide at high image resolution.

Why it's free to use
- Filed October 6, 1999. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended October 6, 2019.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by October 6, 2021.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
