Abstract From the Canadian patent

A drill pipe feeding apparatus which eases the mechanical assembly of one pipe to another to make one long drilling pipe and vice versa. A comb on which the pipes are aligned: a gripping system grasps the pipes in the comb and supplies a drill with pipes. The gripper has a rapid solid, extensible structure which features a retractable head for transportation. A hydraulically-activated chain causes the primary mast to be extracted which in turn, drives a secondary mast which doubles the execution speed. The primary mast is positioned at an acute angle in relation to a positioning cart thus allowing easier access for the operator. 1

Why it's free to use

  • Filed October 4, 2001 and granted June 17, 2003. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended October 4, 2021.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by October 4, 2023.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
