Open the CIPO recordAbstract From the Canadian patent
A method and composition for detecting the presence of stem cells in a population of cells comprising contacting the population of cells with a detectable substrate for aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) under conditions such that ALDH present in cells of the population converts the substrate to a detectable product that is retained by the cells present in the population. The stem cells have a higher concentration of the detectable product than non-stem cells present in the population. A multidrug resistance (MDR) inhibitor can be used to prevent efflux of the substrate from the cells.

Why it's free to use
- Filed December 7, 1999 and granted June 3, 2014. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended December 7, 2019.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by December 7, 2021.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
